Mell-o-phonic

At present, little is known about the Mell-o-phonic phonograph. The Quebec locations for the two advertisements, and especially the one ad in the French language, suggests a Montreal provenance for the brand.

Montreal Star, April 9, 1927, p. 11. The Mell-o-phonic is promoted as a new style gramophone with the new, presumably orthophonic-type, reproduction.

La Presse, April 16, 1927. Échange Mont-Royal Ltée was a Montreal retailer selling gramophones, records, pianos and player pianos, and it also offered gramophone repairs. A Queen’s University thesis, No Quiet Revolution, describes Robert Charlebois as the grandson of the president of Échange Mont-Royal, Pol. Charlebois, and says that the business was reputedly the first RCA Victor distributor in Montreal.

A console model "Mello-phonic" listed in Shelburne, Ontario in 2025. With a slightly different spelling from the ads, "Mello-phonic" instead of "Mell-o-phonic", it is not known whether this example is the same brand.
