The History of Berliner Gramophones Part I
by Mark Caruana
March - April - 2000
This is the first in a series of articles to focus on the contributions made by Emile Berliner who
helped usher in the era of recorded sound. His move to Canada early in this industry's history is not well documented,
even though his contributions continued long after leaving the United States. Assisting with this series is Oliver Berliner,
Emile's grandson and member of CAPS. This article presents an overview of the history of recorded sound up to 1901 and the
founding of the Victor Talking Machine Company by Eldridge Johnson. In the May - June issue of Antique Phonograph News,
Part 2 will follow Emile Berliner's move to Canada and the founding of the Berliner Gram-O-Phone Company.
